Many entrepreneurs are learning that a good small business to start is a consulting business. This is often a very good idea for people that have expertise in a certain field but feel that working for a large corporation is both unrewarding and unsatisfying. With their own consulting business they are able to set their own hours and prices and have much more flexibility. This type of business is also excellent for people that are retired, but want to continue working, at least on a part time basis.

Many people that start a consulting business also find that it works well if they bring other experts into the business either in the same field or in a related area. This provides the opportunity to offer a wider range of services to potential clients. When starting any small business it is still necessary to make sure all of the basics are covered. While experts in a certain area know the field they will be doing the consulting in, they may not know how to run their own business.

This may require some additional training and even expert advice when starting a consulting business. As with all small businesses a good business plan needs to be drawn up to cover areas such as business nest up, financing, and marketing strategies. The business plan will also be needed when it comes time to approach lenders about getting the loan needed to get the business off the ground.

One of the best things about a small consulting business is that if only one person is involved it can often be done from the home and even if there are more people needed the overhead can still be kept at a minimum.
