A good business environment is important to the success of any business. There are really two types of business environments to be considered by anyone starting or running a business. The first is the external business environment and this is particularly important to determine before a new business starts up. For example, if someone is planning to open a retail operation such as a restaurant it is important to get some marketing analysis done of the area where the business will be.

If there are several similar restaurants already in the area, or a history of similar restaurants failing in the past, this can greatly influence the location of the restaurant. The owner may want to find another location with a better business environment. This is true for almost any business that will appeal to customers in a specific location. On the other hand, the operation of the business on the Internet may require research into the amount of competition there will be and determine ways to bring customers to the business website.

The other type of business environment to consider is that internal to the business itself. This simply refers to determining if a business is operation as efficiently as it should. Are the employees happy, productive, and working together as a team? Also is the sales team using an efficient contact management system that makes sure that is follow-up on sales leads and that sales are closing?

Periodically examining both the external and internal business environment is something that should be done in order to keep the business healthy and growing. Some ongoing training in what to look for in a business environment can also be useful.
