According to the Barbados government, flying fish account for 60% of the weight of all fish on the island, but overfishing in the area has reported decreased numbers and set off maritime disputes. Cou cou and flying fish are a staple on the island dubbed as "The Land of Flying Fish". The flying fish is so symbolic in Barbados, that it appears on Barbadian coins, the seal of the Barbados Tourism Authority and in island art.
