The 2009 TEC VenturePrize Business Plan Competition has selected its winners, and this year it's children and pets that will wind up reaping the benefits. The winner of the $90,000 prize, CIE:SeekYourOwnProof.com, created by Ken Bautista Jason Suriano, is an online children's game. The student competition winner, Gordon McKinley, was selected based upon his KennelSeek.com website which connects pet owners to various kennels in their area.
CIE:SeekYourOwnProof.com requires children to register an account with the site in order to play the game. Kids then team up with "cyber agents" at the Central Institute for Exploration (CIE) to locate hidden treasures in various museums. Targeted towards students in the US, the prize money, according to the winners, will be used to market the website.
The student winner, University of Calgary Master's student Gordon McKinley, plans to use his $6,000 winnings to develop the website further to offer new services. The site is designed to connect pet owners with kennels when they are looking for a place to board their pet at the last minute. The site connects these individuals with various kennels in their area. McKinley, though pursuing a degree in Engineering, valued the competition because he felt that his business skills increased as a result. He pursued extra training in order to hone his skills. McKinley credits this training for why he was able to win the competition.
The TEC VenturePrize competition is sponsored by TEC Edmonton. The company specializes in helping inventors transform their ideas into businesses. For more information about TEC Edmonton and the Business Plan competitions, visit http://www.tecedmonton.com.
