On Monday, Dean Price and his business partner Gary Sink went to Washington for the Regional Energy Leadership Briefing. Dean and Gary are the owners of Red Birch Energy in Martinsville, Va.
Aptly timed, their briefing at the White House conincides with the Congress' ongoing consideration of climate change legislation. Their goal was to inform federal leaders about his vision for integrated biodiesal plants as an important alternative to importing oil for transportation. Mr. Price reports that he feels he accomplished his goal, and that "They are listening", "They are looking for solutions to this problem."
Dean and Gary explained the Red Birch Energy business model, and the independence that this model would provide. Simply stated, local farmers produce canola oil, which is sold to the restaurants for $6 - $8 per gallon. After the restaurants use the oil in their deep fryers, the oil is collected and converted to biodiesel for use in cars, trucks, etc... Additionally they install an electrical generator that is fueled by the glycerine byproduct of the biodiesel conversion process. This creates a sustainable model that engages local resources to solve a very large problem we currently face.
