High Point University will open the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at part of its newly opened Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce, the school has announced.
The Center will host opportunities for small businesses to partner with student at the school on mutually beneficial projects. The goal will be to sharpen professional skills both on campus and in the community, the school said.
A key component of the university's entrepreneurial program will be the Business Accelerator Fund established through a donation by Gary Simon, owner of Simon's Jewelers. That fund will support student-led business projects from concept to sustainable venture. Student will have to compete against each other for the funding.
“Creating a way for students to move their business venture past the classroom really intrigued me,” Simon said. “The potential grant for a well-planned business venture will hopefully fuel the students’ creativity. With passion and a plan, success is obtainable.”
High Point University is also starting an undergraduate Entrepreneurship major. The curriculum will include business plan development, social responsibility, finance and other concepts.
