A city councilman that is accused of bribery shouldn't be replaced by his top aide, says a small group of protesters today in Cleveland, Ohio. Protesters are denouncing the latest appointment in what has been deemed an ongoing city string of federal corruption.
The top aide was Nate Wilkes, who served under now former Councilman Robert J. White III. He was appointed by the Democratic Party caucus and sworn in at a closed meeting.
The accused White reportedly took a $500 bribe from a Cleveland businessman who was working undercover with the FBI, says the prosecution.
Wilkes will hold the seat until the next election, which is now less than a year away. he said he was perplexed when he learned about the case against White. The sentence he faces is between 18 months and 2 years in prison. His court date is set for March 12.
