Social Entrepreneur is Awarded $765,000 Grant from Skoll Foundation

The Skoll Foundation has been investing in, connecting, and celebrating social entrepreneurs and other dedicated innovators since 1999, but today they announced the first Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship for the 2010 year. The prestigious award was given to Civic Ventures, a 10-year-old company that brings tutors, mentors and youth workers to impoverished areas. As the first award recipient of the 2010 year, Civic Ventures will receive a $765,000 grant to continue helping children all over the country.Marc Freedman, founder of Civic Ventures, had a belief that the growing older population could prove a valuable resource for children living in poverty. This belief led him to create Experience Corps, a highly successful tutoring and mentoring program that serves over 20,000 children in 23 different cities. The Skoll grant will allow Freedman to expand his education programs to an older market - targeting those over 60 years old.
