Texas State University in San Marcos has launched ACTiVATE, a program that is designed to help women who are running high tech start ups. The program is unique in that it not only identifies and trains women to become technology business leaders, but offers them the opportunity to license technologies developed at the university in order to make their ventures more successful.
The ACTiVATE program lasts for a full year and is taught by successful business owners and entrepreneurs. The program is at least partially funded by the Texas Emerging Technology Fund.
While the program is hoping to target women in technology entrepreneurship, it is not limited to women alone; men will be allowed to apply. However, the focus will be on acquiring and training women applicants first and foremost.
The University of Maryland-Baltimore was the first launch a program of this kind.
