When Should Entrepreneurs Give Up?

There are few inventors as well known as Dean Kamen these days. The creator of the Segway (and tons of less well-known but far more useful inventions) says that it is a question nearly all inventors face at one time or another - when to give up. When a project just doesn't seem to be succeeding, or is becoming too expensive to continue, when is that cutting point?
Kamen says that it is "the toughest question there is". One psychology professor, Abraham Zalenzik, claims that entrepreneurs suffer this as a distinct weakness - an inability to sometimes rectify reality against their conscious.
In answering this question, entrepreneurs must not "let failure demoralize or destroy them".
