Young Entrepreneur Develops eHarmony of Tutoring Services

Just four years after he quit college (at the advice of is college adviser!) to pursue his dorm-room business, 23 year-old Glenn Clayton was recognized by the Huntsville/Madison Chamber of Commerce (Alabama) as its 2009 Entrepreneur of the Year.
That business, Appleton Learning, has become the biggest private educational provider in northern Alabama. While on the surface, Appleton would appear to be one among many tutoring services, Clayton's unique idea was to match tutors personally with each student, much as online dating service eHarmony does with potential couples.
The local chamber of commerce is not alone in recognizing Clayton's accomplishments. His company is also one of ten national finalists for the Dell Small Business Excellence Award. Northern Alabama parents also rate Appleton high in poll after poll.
Clayton never intended to be in the tutoring business. During his college years, his reputation as a top student led other students to seek him out as a tutor. When they began asking for help in subjects that were outside of Clayton's comfort zone, he set up a referral service. Four years later, he's pretty sure that he's found where he's supposed to be.
