SEO Or PPC - Which Marketing Campaign Is Best For Your Online Business?
Before you get started with the Search Engines you should decide which of the two major Search Engine marketing strategies will work best for your site. This will help you to stay on track and not waste a lot of time needlessly. The 2 major Search Engine marketing strategies that exist today are SEO (search engine optimization) and PPC (pay-per-click). You should know and understand that these two methods are very different from one another. This will help you to be better enabled to decide which one is right for you and your web site. Of course, part of this decision will depend upon what your web site is like. One of the main reasons why it is difficult to decide which of these 2 strategies is best for your site lies in understanding why you cannot use both of these methods.
Google's New Patent Translated
There is always great interest within the search engine marketing community whenever a search engine files for a patent. This is especially true for Google, which just recently released a new patent application - System and method for supporting editorial opinion in the ranking of search results (http://tinyurl.com/pambf). However, we must keep in mind that just because a patent has been applied for or granted, the search engines may or may not implement the patent within their primary search results. Nevertheless, these patents often do give us clues about what the search engines are looking for in a website. Some of Google's patents have given us insight into the influence of anchor text, fresh content, themes, data history, link popularity, user behavior, and domain-related inf

Your Search Engine Optimization Strategy: Make Love, Not War
When it comes to search engine optimization strategy, there are basically two camps – those who view search engines as adversaries to be conquered at any cost and those who regard search engines as partners in their online marketing efforts. Long-time readers of my articles probably already have a good idea of which camp I fall into; however, I believe both approaches can be effective optimization methods. Adversarial Optimization Methods Service providers who have this "adversarial" philosophy will tell their prospects that the formulation of a search engine optimization strategy is much like a high-stakes game of chess. It’s an "us vs. them," "winner-take-all," and "every man for himself" mentality. It’s also rooted largely in technology – under this
Anatomy Of A Search Engine Placement Campaign
With the tremendous changes seen in the search engine marketplace over the past year, the conduct and techniques of winning search engine marketing campaigns have changed. Tactics and assumptions that worked last year may not produce the same results today. With a realignment of market share between Google and Yahoo, and the introduction of new algorithms and services, the playing field looks remarkably different in 2004. Search Engine Marketing campaigns have become far more complex over the past twelve months. Good SEO and SEM firms have had to become competent with a larger number of marketing tools offered by the search engines. Due to these changes, many Search Engine Marketing firms have had to raise their prices or alter the levels of service offered to clients. In reconc
Traffic Power Class Action - Spammed I Am Man...
For years we have been warning that unethical SEO techniques that violate Google's SEO guidelines could result in a site being banned from the Google index. In the past week, Google made a fairly major ranking update that appears to have wiped clients of Traffic Power, from the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). A growing class action lawsuit is targeting what are being called unethical SEO practices used by Traffic Power. Many webmasters are familiar with a regular barrage of unsolicited Emails and phone calls from this firm and most wisely choose to ignore them. Some webmasters, unfortunately, did not ignore Traffic Power and contracted them to perform services on their websites. In the past weeks, clients of Traffic Power were almost universally banned from Google. While t
HOT Off The Press! The Search Engine Strategies Conference
The Search Engine Strategies Conference is one of the largest and most comprehensive search engine focused conventions of the year. Held quarterly in different cities around the world, this spring's conference is being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Center in the middle of the country's largest and most diverse city. I was fortunate enough to be invited to participate as a speaker at one of the site clinic sessions. Organized by Jupiter Media, the publishers of Search Engine Watch, and sponsored by some of the major players in search engine marketing, (such as Google), the SES conferences form an excellent environment for SEOs, webmasters, business owners and the search tools we all depend on to get together and discuss dozens of different facets of our shared advertisi
Google And Yahoo :: What Works Well And What Won't
Last week I wrote about how we plan out our search engine placement campaigns. The past few months have been an interesting time in the world of search engine marketing but now the dust seems to be settling. Google has appeared relativity stable for the past month and the SEM world now has a better handle on the submission fees introduced by Yahoo two weeks ago. Now that we have survived the changes and absorbed an extraordinary amount of information we need to adapt to the new basic steps required to achieve the Top Placements on Google and Yahoo, the two most important places to place. There are a few new basic rules webmasters and search engine optimizers need to know and a number of old-rules that remain important. There are a few new techniques that may cost client's money
Seach Engine Marketing Campaign Planning
The search engine marketing environment is undergoing enormous changes as the industry and the Internet mature. The changes we've seen over the past six months are only the tip of a much larger iceberg as new technologies and innovations on established ideas radically alter how we look for information and how that information is delivered to us by search engines. For marketers and advertisers in the traditional world of print and broadcast media, change happens slowly, generally with enough warning to allow for long-term decisions and campaign planning. On the Internet however, change happens at light-speed and alterations to search engine algorithms, fees, services and listing distribution can literally happen overnight. These rapid changes present several planning issues for se
SA Ethics Debate Spills Into International Spotlight
An ethical SEO dust-up, which started in the South African media last Friday, has spilled over into the international SEO media. Cape Town ISP, Tiscali SA is defending itself after issuing a press release touting new, automated SEO services it offers clients under the name, E-Traffic. In the press release, Tiscali states it uses hidden text and doorway pages, with the goal of getting clients' websites, "right in the face of active online consumers." One line of the release states, "Doorway pages are created that target specific search engines to improve search engine rankings." Others contain words such as "hidden text", making obvious implications of keyword stuffing, duplicate content and other violations of common search engine Terms of Service agreements. The langu
