William Goodspeed, a prominent man who loved the theater, had a five-story building built back in 1876. Mr. Goodspeed had the house itself built by shipyard carpenter's. The Goodspeed Opera House held many businesses with in it on different floors. It housed a steamboat passenger terminal, business office's, a general store, and a theater on the top floor of the place.
The theater was the one that flourished the most of all the businesses. The townspeople dubbed the theater as being called "Goodspeed's folly" and he hosted musicals, vaudeville acts, operettas, minstrel shows, and on occasion he would have a Broadway show.
The "Goodspeed Opera" fell into disrepair after the death of William in 1882. In fact, it was slated for demolition in 1958, but it was saved by a preservationists group and has been restored for service once again.
