Subway Deemed #1 Franchise Opportunity

Entrepreneur magazine annually ranks the top 500 franchise opportunities on both a national and global level. This year, for the sixteenth time, Subway was deemed to be the best.
The popular sandwich chain boasts over 30,000 locations worldwide, putting it close to overtaking the largest fast food chain in the world, McDonald's, in terms of number of locations. Subway representative John Musco attributes the company's success to the quality and level of support available to franchisees. Many of the company's most famous marketing slogans - from the Subway diet to $5 footlongs - came from individual store owners. This dedication to their franchisees helped to set Subway apart from its competitors.
Despite the numerous financial woes of the past year, Subway continued to expand during 2008 to wind up with what CEO and co-founder Fred DeLuca calls their "best year ever". Over 1,600 stores are scheduled to open this year with an additional 2,400 franchises already purchased and ready to be built. Store owners attribute part of this success to the cost of their food - people, despite the economy, still need to eat. The appeal of inexpensive, yet moderately healthy as opposed to competitors, fast food has allowed Subway franchises to stay afloat despite the downtrodden economy. Although the number of restaurants opening has slowed due to the real estate market and the availability of loans, Subway remains yet again a profitable and rewarding franchise opportunity.
