President Obama has promised the world that there will be changes made in the United States in order to attain sustainability in the different government programs. This is even true of the United States Postal Service (USPS). This is a huge endeavor which shows the many different ways that the giant is making a difference in the global climate sector. This is a huge undertaking for an organization with annual revenue of over $68 billion. To put this in perspective, if the USPS was privately owned, or publicly traded, it would be about number 28 in the Fortune 500 companies last year.

Among the many things which are listed on the report are things like being able to stamp postage through postage meters. The soy ink used by the machines is something which is biodegradable and the ink postage means fewer trees are being used to create a stamp to go on the papers. While the USPS cannot do much to make the postage scales more desirable to businesses â€" they already help to save hundreds to thousands every year â€" they can remind businesses about how they can save by using them.

One of the big accomplishments that the USPS has been able to cite in their report is that they have been dubbed the “most trusted government agency’ for the sixth straight year. This means that of all the different agencies which are available to the public, the USPS has been able to offer the kind of service that all other branches can learn from.

Other initiatives the USPS has instituted is to reduce the greenhouse gases produced by delivering the mail as well as the waste reductions which can be implemented in the handling and the delivery of the mail. This is a huge undertaking, once again, since you are dealing with an organization which is responsible for delivering over half of the world’s mail.

The USPS also met with other postal agencies from around the world at the United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen to discuss things like reductions in greenhouse gases and how there could be more of an effort made on all parts to make sure that a change is being made in the way that the delivery of mail is being accomplished.

One more thing to consider is that the USPS is the first government agency to name a sustainability officer whose job it will be to continue to look for ways in which improvements can be made to bring about even greater change in policies and procedures so that even better sustainability can be accomplished.

The USPS has not only set the standard for the rest of the government, they have set a standard that other businesses should be following as well. By taking a closer look at the report about the USPS, many businesses will be able to get ideas about how they will be able to make changes so that they will also be more sustainable.
